Viking culture was very rich in symbology, and the Vikings believed that symbols had power.
The Valknut, a symbol of three interlocking triangles, represented Valhalla.
Valhalla is Odin’s hall in Asgard. He chooses Viking warriors that die bravely in battle, to live in Valhalla, there to feast and fight until they are called on again to fight alongside the gods in the final battle of Ragnarok.
All Viking warriors aspired to reach Valhalla, and thus the Valknut was also a symbol of the courage required to get there.
The Valknut was used to indicate that the deceased person was in Valhalla, or perhaps to call on the Valkyries, the assistants to Odin, to come and take the spirit of the deceased there.
This stunning sterling silver pendant placed the Valknut within a setting of curling branches, a motif popular in Norse art.
